RONA

Introducing beautiful Rona, a six-year-old Dobergirl who lives with her human mom and Dobersister Inga in Virginia. Rona’s human mom, Kelly, contacted us because Rona had developed a couple of mammary masses that concerned her veterinarian. Because Rona has not yet been spayed her vet felt some diagnostics were necessary before proceeding with either the spay or mass removal; DIP funded    x-rays which revealed what appears be a mass in one of Rona’s lungs, possibly a result of metastasis of the mammary mass.

Rona is scheduled for a consult with an oncologist right after Labor Day, which will determine how we proceed. If the oncologist feels she is a candidate for surgery we will help fund that choice; if not, we will work with Kelly to determine the best outcome for her and Rona in both the short and long term.

APOLLO

Meet the most adorable red DoberBoy in Texas (and far beyond): Apollo. Barely four years old, he is suffering from some very serious medical issues. The problem is that his doctors have been unable to diagnose what’s causing his illness. He has already had an exploratory intestinal surgery, which produced no viable information except that he does not have an intestinal blockage.

While his human parents were happy about that, they are still desperately concerned for him because he is not improving. His bloodwork is only marginally better (as of yesterday, 8/29/24); not enough to encourage any of his doctors. They want a specialist to do an endoscopic exam to see if he has ulcers or any one of several other things affecting him so severely.

His human parents came to DIP for assistance because they are out several thousands of dollars between his bloodwork, intestinal surgery, and multiple trips to the ER without any real diagnosis yet. Because Apollo is still sick, we agreed to help with the next steps in his diagnostic workup, an endoscopy, early next week.

Sophia

Sophia needs a major neck surgery in order to stabilize her so she can continue to walk. She lives in a lovely Southern California community with her human parents and another dog, a cat, and a bird. She’s used to being able to walk with her owner, Wendy, but as the broken vertebra in her worsens she’s become less and less able to do that; she is not able to go on walks with Wendy at all now.

The surgery required to stabilize Sophia is several thousand dollars—as much as $10K. Several things are unknown until the neurology team completes an MRI; this will show the exact position of the broken vertebra and provide key information regarding the most viable method of stabilizing Sophia’s neck. The most likely scenario would be surgical removal of the broken vertebra; this will prevent further injury from the bone fragments pressing on and pinching the spinal cord, which will allow it to heal.

Shadow Borie

Shadow is a Doberman who takes regular medication to control seizures and the costs of the medication have become overwhelming for Shadow’s owner, Patrick. In addition to finding himself out of regular work and struggling to make ends meet, the expenses of Shadow’s medication made it so Patrick felt he might become unable to provide him with regular, quality food.

Patrick came to us asking for short-term assistance with medications and food, and since that time DIP has stepped up to regularly pay for Shadow’s food, his (now two, both expensive) anti-seizure medications, vaccines, and bloodwork required in order to maintain the correct levels of the medications in his body. Patrick has not had as much luck with job prospects as he had hoped, so we are doing exactly what our mission says we do: we are keeping Shadow in his home with the person who loves him.

Shadow is probably a classic example of a Doberman who would end up relinquished to a shelter or rescue without DIP’s ongoing support. We are only able to provide support to our applicants because of our generous donors; we appreciate every penny we receive from you because it helps us provide assistance for Dobermans like this.

Case update October 2019

DIP supported Patrick and Shadow by paying for his veterinary care, medications, and food. Shadow began having seizures which were less and less controlled with the medications prescribed for him; this happens in cases like this when dogs are taking the maximum dosages of medications for conditions like seizures and the seizures return. The medications dosages cannot be increased without risking the dog’s health, but the seizures cause the dog intense pain. This is what happened in Shadow’s case. Patrick made the wrenching decision to euthanize Shadow in October, on the advice of the emergency vet who saw Shadow for his final visit. Confirming for Patrick that the seizures could no longer be managed.

RIP, Shadow.

Roxie Torgrimson

A wonderful and much-loved member of the family since coming to live with her owners, Jeffrey and Pam, as a puppy, Roxie is now nine years old and began to have trouble getting around. Her veterinarian determined pretty quickly that it was more than age-related stiffness; in fact, Roxie had a torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament).

These injuries are often curable with surgery, and her vet felt she was an excellent candidate for a TPLO procedure, one which is often used by orthopedic specialists in cases like this one.

DIP assisted with the expenses, the total of which was far more than we could manage alone. Roxie was on the road to a complete recovery the last time Jeffery updated us.
